> Academic-Industry Mining (AIM)

Kate Dr. Kate Brown Requist, Assistant Professor of Mining Engineering, recently completed the Academic-Industry Mining (AIM) Fellowship with Freeport-McMoRan, an internationally recognized program that immerses university faculty in modern mining operations. The fellowship brought together 12 educators from leading institutions for eight weeks of hands-on collaboration with industry professionals, giving participants direct exposure to the technologies, practices, and challenges shaping the future of mining.

Throughout the fellowship, Dr. Brown Requist worked within Freeport-McMoRan's Underground Planning Division for PT Freeport-Indonesia's Grasberg Mining Complex, a collection of four major underground gold mines. She additionally visited major mining operations and technology centers across Arizona, home to Freeport-McMoRan's headquarters. These experiences provided an in-depth perspective on how data analytics, digital transformation, automation, and operational innovation are changing the mining industry.

Dr. Brown Requist plans to bring these experiences directly into her teaching and research programs at 黑料科. By connecting classroom instruction with contemporary industry practice, she is helping prepare the next generation of mining engineers with the technical knowledge, analytical skills, and professional perspective needed to contribute to an increasingly data-driven and technology-enabled mining sector. Her participation in the AIM Fellowship reflects a broader commitment to strengthening partnerships between academia and industry while advancing excellence in engineering education and workforce development.
